Top Fire Causes on UAE Construction Sites
Construction sites present a unique combination of fire hazards: temporary electrical connections, flammable materials in storage, hot work operations (welding, cutting, grinding), and LPG cylinders for heating and fabrication. In a busy UAE site environment, these risks are amplified by high ambient temperatures and large numbers of workers.
Civil Defence Requirements for Contractors
UAE Civil Defence and the relevant municipal authorities require all construction sites to:
- Appoint a site fire safety officer
- Maintain a valid fire safety plan approved by Civil Defence
- Post emergency contact numbers and evacuation diagrams throughout the site
- Conduct weekly fire safety inspections and document findings
- Ensure all fire equipment is serviced and accessible
Required Fire Equipment on UAE Construction Sites
At a minimum, UAE construction sites must have the following equipment, supplied by an approved provider such as FireSupplies.ae:
- Portable fire extinguishers — dry powder ABC minimum, CO₂ for electrical areas
- Fire blankets — at all first aid points
- Fire safety signs — fire exit, assembly point, extinguisher location
- Hose reels or hydrant connections on larger sites
- Fire warden kit — vests, torches, megaphones
Temporary Electrical Safety
Temporary electrical installations are a leading cause of site fires. Contractors must:
- Use only cable rated for UAE ambient temperatures (often 70°C+)
- Ensure all connections are made by a licensed electrician
- Protect cables from vehicle damage and UV degradation
- Use RCD (residual current device) protection on all circuits
- Inspect temporary wiring weekly and after any incident
Flammable Material Storage Rules
- Store flammable liquids in an approved, ventilated, lockable cabinet away from work areas
- LPG cylinders must be stored upright in a secured outdoor cage, away from heat sources
- Maintain a clear 3-metre exclusion zone around LPG storage
- Do not store more than the minimum daily requirement of flammable materials on site
Hot Work Permit Procedures
All hot work (welding, cutting, grinding, soldering) must be controlled by a formal Hot Work Permit system:
- Issue a written permit before each hot work session
- Conduct a fire risk assessment of the area
- Clear combustibles from a 10-metre radius
- Have a fire extinguisher and fire watch person present throughout
- Maintain a 30-minute fire watch after hot work completes
- Sign off and close the permit at end of session
Emergency Assembly Points
Every UAE construction site must have clearly marked and communicated assembly points. Assembly point signs must be visible from all parts of the site and maintained in good condition regardless of weather.
